I saw Jim Jr. this last summer with Doc Severinsen at the International Trumpet Guild (ITG) conference in San Antonio. Between them, they had great stories and great music. Jim said he used to play in the basement of the Hyatt River Walk where we were.

Hi Jim, Listmates,
The Happy Jazz Band is another story altogether!
Although I have never visited Texas (and probably never shall), I remember Jim Cullum's Happy Jazz Band, with a very young cornet player Jim Cullum (junior). Wow, what a band! I loved Jim Cullum's clarinetting (and still listen to "The Eloquent Clarinet of Jim Cullum"). When Cullum junior "inherited" the band, he kept the name for a while, but changed it later when the band's style had changed. It still is a wonderful band!
Cheers!

All these mentions of the Dukes of Dixieland and influences prompt me to give tip of the hat to The Happy Jazz Band in San Antonio, broadcasting Friday nights on WOAI from The Landing on the Riverwalk. That was shortly before HemisFair revitalized the area on the way to what the Riverwalk has become. I was too young to be allowed in at the Landing then.

As a young Navy officer in San Diego after college, I was a life member of Mickey Finn’s, spending many a happy evening with the sawdust, peanuts and tourists. It is hard to remember after these decades whether the attraction was the music or Mickey Finn!
