About an hour ago I returned from a concert of the Swing Dance Orchestra
from Berlin.
I confess going with apprehension - the publicity gave great weight to the
girl singer, and I was afraid it would be a mostly vocal performance.
Luckily, I was pleasantly disappointed (even if it looks like an
oxymoron). What a band!
The programme was advertised as
music from Woody Allen films", and appropriately consisted of songs played
in those films, but Allen uses a lot of OKOM. The bend started with a
rousing performance of "Take the A Train," and by the second minute I knew
that I made a wise choice when I decided to go. Some Glenn Miller numbers
were included (In the Mood, American Patrol, and - unfortunately - one of
the serenades and the Miller arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue), BG songs,
such as "Sing Sing Sing" and "If I had You", the Shaw hit "Begin the
Beguine" (for which dancers from the Dance Tel-Aviv Studio were invited on
stage), etc. Some of the vocal numbers were not so great - I didn't like
"Si tu vois ma mere" (other people did), but the singer gave a very good
show on "Bei Mier Bist Du Shoen" and some other numbers. The band had a
young black drummer whom the leader and Pianist Anderj Hermlin introduced
as "a young man whom I have known for seventeen years - my son David." In
addition to good drumming, he also is a pretty good singer, although I
would have preferred less hi-de-hoing on "Minnie the Moocher." He was good
and rhythmic on the Lunceford arrangement of "Four or Five Times," and some
other numbers. His duets with the girls singer were also successful.
Towards the end the band played another ballad I don't like very much -
Goodman's finishing song "Good Bye." However, it played a hot number after
that one, and "Sweet Sue" as the encore.
To sum up - although not everything was that great, I left the hall in
wonderful state of mind. A jolly good show!
