A true jazz legend, evidenced by the blue plaque on his childhood home in
Leytonstone, trombonist, Jackie Free, kicks off the new year session at
the ARC, (St John’s Arts & Recreation Centre, St John’s Walk, Market St,
Old Harlow CM17 0AJ) on Saturday 27th January at 3pm. (Note the new date
and time).

Leading his six piece band, Jackie Free’s Chicagoans, the Epping based
musician, in his 86th year, has seen many changes to the music scene, since
he started blowing his horn as a kid in the Boy’s Brigade in the ‘40s.

A member of the pioneering Freddy Randall Jazz Band, with whom he made many
recordings, Jackie played with the amazing Louis Satchmo Armstrong in 1956.

A British Movietone film was shot in 1964 of Jackie with the Randall band,
accompanying an 8 year old clarinettist. (see below)

A devotee of the jazz pioneered by white musicians in the Windy City, in
the late 20s, Jackie’s band plays in true Chicago style. Its repertoire
includes such Dixieland classics as “Indiana”, “At The Jazz Band Ball”, and
“Tin Roof Blues”.

During the ‘80s, at the now defunct “Square”, Jackie worked with former
Harlow drummer, John Petters, alongside a number of touring American jazz
originals, including former Artie Shaw trumpeter, Billy Butterfield and
former Bob Crosby and Tommy Dorsey trumpeter, Yank Lawson. The album
“Makin’ Whoopee”, with Lawson was recorded in 1986. (see below and download
a free MP3 track)

Jackie was featured in the Legends of American Dixieland, with
octogenarians, Wild Bill Davison and Art Hodes, both pioneers of Chicago
jazz, in the gangster controlled Speakeasies of the ‘20s. The band sold out
The Playhouse Theatre, Harlow in May 1989. (See video below)

The album “Together Again” was recorded with the Legends in 1988. (free
Download “I Never Knew” from the album see below).

Jackie retains his unique style and drive and remains an important part of
the national jazz scene, playing at clubs and festivals all over the UK.

Featured in the band will be the amazingly talented trumpet virtuoso, Peter
Rudeforth a member of the Chris Barber Band.

Clarinettist, Julian Stringle is no stranger to Harlow, having been a key
member of the John Petters Swing Band, which was formed in the town. The
late Sir John Dankworth said of him, *“Julian is an immense talent, his
playing has ‘world class’ written all over it”.*

Returning to the piano stool will be the highly popular piano professor,
Martin Litton, whose playing never fails to delight audiences.

Harlow bassist, Keith Donald and John Petters on drums will complete this
foot tapping, stomping line up.
