[Dixielandjazz] much exaggerated

Nice of Uncle Bill  to refrain
from using the pen name Mark Twain
cited rather for a useful quote
than the premature R.I.P. note
whose attachment to his moniker will remain.

For how many fine folk it the past
was a flag too soon hung at half mast?
And the thing which makes friends most blue
is when the report's proven true ...

Of course one of the eeriest entries in the discography is a date by Peetie Wheatstraw,
where rather than his incredibly so much the same piano playing
his singing was accompanied by jazzpersons,
often reduced to repeating themselves ..
Shortly before his untimely demise, I think aboard a car driven into a stationary train,
he recorded at his last session "Hearse Man Blues", "Bring me Flowers while I'm Living"  --I shall not add any more from the list. I think the pianist was Lil Armstrong.
The excellent tenor saxophonist was aurally identified with some confidence as Ch Berry;until somebody checked the date, leaving one supposes the possibility that Chu came back from the dead to play the date --he hadn't been up there all that long, but he had definintely departed some days before the session.

Oooooo-oooooo----

My mistake. Judy Hendricks told me Bev Borcher passed away and I thought she said Judy Borcher.

I got a call from Judy Borcher. She was very upset with me and I don?t blame her.

So, I am happy to report that Judy Borcher is very much alive and hopefully accepted my apologies.

We do see life, don't we?

Mind you, I wrote Dodo Marmarosa's obituary and had it published in The
Independent. The next day his sister rang the editor from the States and
complained. Dodo was standing beside her.

It worked out all right. When he DID die we published the piece again
(although I didn't get paid twice).

Dear Steve, Steve and all,
We all recall the famous line from Samuel What?s-his-name that "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.?
Here in Sydney in 2001, a tribute obituary of the wonderful 1930s-40s swing band singer, Barbara James, appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald. (She had only moved to a nursing home.)
She was absolutely delighted and observed at the time that you rarely hear what people say about you after you die.
She died in 2004 aged 94.
Cheers,
Bill.
