The musically healthy left-winger who alternates jazz with commentary on
more controversial matters which don't belong on this site
has marked the departure of the pianist-poet Roy Fisher
with a posting of Fisher's poem on Joe Sullivan
Recently I was looking on YouTube for the c.1962 Ralph Gleason TV show
with its extended interview with Joe --
it seemed it had been removed:
but here is a link to it, and it's certainly back!
Well worth a listen (Joe I think may even be playing better in the Spanier band
which also featured in Gleason's series -- and there's also a Jimmie Rushing set
with the gentleman showing he was a very interesting and competent pianist:
some people did during his recording career suppose keyboard orthodoxy a sine qua non;
and speak condescendingly of Monk, as if his hands ought to have been scarred by
the iron ruler of Madame Sinkinscales -- no relation to the Mrs. K who taught Master Ellington)
The Gleason show indicates something of how Ken Gallagher came to be bowled over ...
"he was just marvellous", said Ken, of an afternoon spent with Maestro Sullivan.
The show shares a DVD with an Earl Hines one... but it was on YouTube yesterday...
