This Bill Evans video crossed my screen today. Couple of facts which, I hope, will add to your enjoyment. The Philip Furia biography of Johnny Mercer told about the how we almost lost getting the English words to this song. A U. S. music producer had option to rights to this song and he had contracted with Johnny Mercer to write them. Johnny had procrastinated—they had a year to exercise the option and time was about to run out—so the producer nagged Mercer again. While waiting for his ride in NYC, Mercer composed the words in fifteen minutes! ( The Furia book makes mention, took, of Mercer’s longtime obsession and romance with Judy Garland—through several of her marriages.)

For Pensacola fans, Evans was a music student at Southeastern Louisiana State University in Hammond, and his teacher was John Venetozzi. Dr. Venetozzi was subsequently longtime chair of music department at Pensacola Junior College ( now Pensacola State College) and longtime conductor of Pensacola Symphony. It’s not clear to me how Evans, a New Jersey native, came to study music in Louisiana. Help me, jazz experts!

Thanks.

Originally a 1945 French song
"Les feuilles mortes" (literally
"Dead Leaves"), "Autumn Leaves" was
written by Joseph Kosma and the
french lyrics by poet Jacques Prévert.

The English lyrics were written in 1947
by the American songwriter Johnny Mercer.

Here, the Bill Evans trio plays it as an
instrumental jazz standard.
