[Dixielandjazz] Blue Prelude

considering that tunes were for a very long time passed round or collected by ear --
in Pushkin's fantasy drama of Salieri murdering Mozart what really irks Salieri is hearing a pauper on the street whistling one of Mozart's tunes --I should suppose that by paying attention to the words you're not adding something outside of the music as it would be without words, you're just taking the chance to hear it better.
Of course if the words go against what you hear in the music without words, you might be hearing the tune better than whoever put the words to it, if the words were written first.
Of course if the lyric's really ghastly you might be put off a tune which could be a valuable addition to your repertoire.
I gather however that having somebody sing words can on occasion give a band some peace from crowd (can't call them audience)chatter.
sing on!Robert R. Calder

Just listened to the Shearing/Lee version, and other than not being my normal cup of tea, I can't fault it a bit. In fact, I can say that to me Peggy's love of singing it is obvious. Her relation to the underlying rhythm reminds me of how Bing would "float" above it, making the sum total something new in and of itself.

Yup, that?s it, Peggy Lee and George Shearing. It doesn?t get any better than that.

The tempo is rather odd for the tune. However, the musicians who are playing make it work. With George Shearing and Toots Thielman (and the rhythm section) backing like they do on this tune, Peggy Lee could sing the "Beer Barrel Polka" and it would sound good. Listen to the pitch in the wide tonal range she displays on this tune. Absolutely beautiful!
Thanks to Charles Suhor for locating this tune on youtube. It was delightful!!

I've seen this DVD. It is just great! The band was in top form, guests
were varied and entertaining and the reason for the concert moving. There
was a great electricity coming from the audience which had a lot of college
age students in it who, I am sure, had not heard music like this before but
who were absolutely grabbed by it! Oh, yeah, I was there at the original
concert too. What a great memory to have come alive!

Hello Listmates,
The Black Eagles are pleased to release a new DVD featuring music from a
memorial concert for Chester Zardis recorded back in 1990. The concert
featured Danny Barker, Alan Lomax, Tommy Sancton and Brian Ogilvie as guests
of the band. The DVD contains about 108 minutes of music and tributes to
Chester by Alan Lomax. Danny talks about growing up in New Orleans and other
experiences. The DVD is available in both NTSC and PAL formats.

The Jazz Discography lists 118 recordings of "Blue Prelude". The first was
by the Casa Loma Orchestra on January 31, 1933.

Roger wrote with the details of the Freddie Assunto recording I referred to
in my original post. The date of the 1955 issue works, as I would have
learned the song from that recording in 1959. I remember the house I was
living in at the time in Seal Beach, California!
I also followed someone else's lead to YouTube to hear the live performance
of the song. I had forgotten that it was played as a dirge. We play it as
a normal, but sad, ballad. I still have the sound & phrasing of the
original recording in my head, though. Those that blast the Dukes for being
a clown band, etc., though, should eat their words when they listen to this,
as there is an honest to goodness good trombonist playing on that recording.
The original aim of my post was to stir up a discussion on whether or not
others consider some lyrics to having some meaning in how we play melodies
and improvise some songs. That didn't happen, but it was nice, anyway, to
see all the responses on djml.
Although the Peggy Lee recording was good, I don't understand how the group
came up with that rhythm & tempo after hearing the lyrics. Doesn't really
fit at all. Seems to fit more the period in which the recording was made,
rather than the actual lyrics, which are timeless. Don't particularly like
the dirge effect, either. A down & out blues tempo & feel fit better.
Jim
