Norman And the rest of DJML members:

In answer to Norman’s question as to why DJML has not heard from me on the
subject of the Sacramento Music (Jazz) (Dixieland) Festival being canceled
for 2018. While I served on the Board of Directors for the STJS, (Sacramento
Traditional Jazz Society) sponsor of the Festival off and on since it was
formed in 1968 and served as Guest Star/Band coordinator for a total of
about 20 years off and on, I have not been on the Board for several years.
Thus the closing down of the Festival was a surprise to me.

I also served on the band committee for the Festival in the beginning when
Bill Borcher was the Executive Director and my band, the Fulton Street Jazz
Band is the only band out of a thousand or so which has played every
Festival since the beginning, some 44 years ago.

I actually heard about the cancelation of the 2018 from a Bay Area musician,
while on a gig in the San Francisco Bay Area. Since there had been false
rumors circulating every year for the past 30 years that the Festival would
be no more, I figured it was just another rumor. I was surprised to find out
that the rumor was true this time.

I don’t know all of the details so I hesitate to say much more at this time,
except that it is a sad day for Sacramento, for musicians and for Jazz.

Being out of town, I was on a radio show by telephone while in my car this
morning. The show will be rebroadcast this evening at 7:05 PM on KXJZ
Capitol Public Radio in Sacramento. You can listen to it by going to
“Insight” on KXJZ. Also on the show was Mick Martin who has a long-running
Blues show on Saturdays on the station. Mick’s Blues Band was added to the
Festival when we started bringing in other forms of American roots based
music. In studio was also a member of the current STJS Board of Directors.

I understand there are two other festivals which are shutting down also. As
I told the radio audience today, “Times have changed. We can’t stop it.
Change is inevitable, unlike putting money in a vending machine.”

If and when I find out more details, I will report them to the DJML members.
ITMT listen in to KXJZ tonight, Tuesday Dec 19 at 7:00 PM PST.
