Hi Barb,

My message was not to you personally, but to all untrained musicians who don’t have the skills to function as a professional - in this case knowing how to transpose, a basic skill which is learned in a first year music theory course.

I believe there is plenty of room in our musical society for amateurs and hobbyists - something that is not accepted in medicine, law, or the teaching profession - let alone airline pilots or even bus drivers (whom I believe deserve a lot of respect).

To that point, I also believe that vocalists in particular invest very little into the music. How many vocalists do you know who have gone to an arranger and said: Here’s $1,000.00 - how many arrangements can you make for me , in my keys, for a basic combo of rhythm section and one horn?

This is an important discussion, Barb, and even if it is not a day to soon for you, I hope others will engage in thoughtful and witty discussion about the issue raised here.

Yours for Music,

Andrew

Thanks for letting me know who you are. I hope I never have the misfortune to meet you in person. You obviously don't know this list and how supportive and helpful we are to each other. This is not the place for you.
