Somewhere along the way it has become a "requirement" to play very fast choruses (cut time, double time, or just plain fast) to follow the medium tempo introduction of the melody. Wondering who first introduced the now traditional tempo speed up.

Dear Ken,
I suggest that we can blame the Red Nichols - Dorsey brothers mob.
Or Fats Waller.
Listen to:

Miff Mole and his Little Molers 24 Sept 1929

Red Nichols 3 Feb 1930

Fats Waller and Benny Payne 23 March 1930 (no verse)

Although, the 26 November 1929 Louis rendition reversed it by slowing down for the coda.
Which the Condon groups seemed to favour.
Kind regards,
Bill.
