I have heard this argument before, and I tend to agree - to a point. I
like the argument anyway because, thanks to it, I ended up having Turk
Murphy's "Live at the Roundtable" - the English friend who had received it
from someone didn't think it swung and sent it to me.
I have the feeling that putting the West Coast bands together doesn't
reflect their character - almost all bands which came after the Yerba Buena
swing more.
And there was another branch, much looser, best represented by Bob Mielke's
Bearcats.
Besides, there was much more going on on that coast, and such wonderful
musicians as Dick Cathart, Matty Matlock, Clyde Hurley and - yes - Abe
Lincoln - and many more, not identified with "West Coast style," were
active there.
There was also a later generation, Jim Goodwin for example.
Be it as it may, the two styles are not mutually exclusive, Charlie - one
can enjoy both.
Cheers
