I was much amused, and maybe too was the venerable admirable Mr. Keepnews, when somebody got round to publishing his account of the recordings he made of Gerry Mulligan with Monk. When the recoeding was first issued, the poor producer had to face a lot of reviews accusing him of taking commercial non-musical advantage of the market value of both men's work at the time -- but the idea came to him when at an earlier date Monk told him Gerry had given him a lift to the studio. Monk remisunderstood?
Of course each man did have his moments of traditionalism revisited, to take a phrase from the lately departed Clark Terry's and Mulligan's sometime partner -- but there is the question of what those first reviewers were listening for, not to mention the Mulligan-Brookmeyer effect on John Barnes and Roy Williams, et ceteris,
