I received my kit last week, and apologize to Dave for not yet sending
him a very heartfelt thank-you because this kit is great; the included
arrangement/transcriptions are absolutely going into our concert
repertoire this summer!

I have a pet peeve with the sort of 'jazz' education that throws some
semi-modern piece at the kids (typically Sonny Rollins) and then toss
off some "this chord is THIS scale" nonsense and expects the band to
swing. Parents and grandparents are all that really appreciate
listing to this sort of tripe.

One cannot speak a foreign language by being handed a dictionary and a
topic to write about, there is a need to get a feel for the sound, for
the context and for where the language comes from, and where it is
going. Jazz is a language like any other, and this kit respectfully
treats it as such. If you are setting out to teach kids aged 5 to
high school how to really "play that thing", not only is Dave's kit a
useful tutorial, but he will personally visit your school (if you are
in the continental US) to get you up to speed!
