Andy is correct.
Alternatively, in your iTunes General preferences, you can set your iTunes import settings to import using a WAV encoder or an AIFF encoder. Do this before you insert the CD. When you insert it, follow the prompts.....eezy-peezy.

I have seen this error and I seem to remember it is a copyright
issue with the code needed to read the CD. So you have to use
something else to read the data off the CD and generate WAV files
on your disk.
The program they suggest is CDex, which you can download
from here
http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/
It is pretty easy to use and will extract the data from a CD into
lots of different formats. WAV is the best for editing. I use
it and find it does the job very well.
You've probably already found it, but the audacity web page
here tells you how to use it
http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/tutorial_how_to_import_cds.html
If you want to stick with Audacity then I think this is probably
the easiest way forward. If you really don't want to download anything
else then you can use Windows Media Player (version 11 or higher).
It has an option in Tools->Options->Rip Music that will rip the CD to
files on your disk. Or if you already have it, you can use iTunes.
There are other software packages that include everything
like Nero
http://www.nero.com/eng/downloads/
But these usually cost money.
