Dear Ken,
You put that question to the DJML back in late October 2010.
To which I replied: "The only mention of George Lewis in 'The Wildest One.
The Life of Wild Bill Davidson' by Hal Willard [1996] is in reference to
Bill's long love-hate relationship with Kenny Davern and noting Kenny's
admiration for the playing of Pee Wee Russell and George Lewis.
Perhaps there is something in Edward N. Meyer?s recent biography of Kenny
Davern?s life and music, 'Just Four Bars' [2010. Scarecrow Press].
I do not have this yet."
[I still do not have that book because it is too expensive.] Steve Barbone
also replied: "Kenny Davern's bio, by Edward N. Meyer does not reference WBD
and George Lewis peforming. There is, however a passing reference to the
sometimes tension between Davern and WBD."

However, I do not recall any further discussion regarding your query.
Maybe this time around we may have better luck.
As you know, both Wild Bill and George Lewis made tours to Europe and the UK
in the 50s and 60s.
This seems a likely place and time for the encounter to have occurred.
Very kind regards,
Bill.

Hi, Marek,

I last played with Jack at the French Quarter Festival in New Orleans in
2007, and for a while after that we continued to exchange a few emails, but
I haven't heard from him in quite a while. Perhaps someone has had a more
recent meeting with him.

I trust he is still with us.

Regards,

Bert Thompson

And don't forget Steamboat Willie at Cafe Begniet right across from the
Royal Sonnesta on Bourbon where the statues are - plays 6-11 almost every
night - sit ins welcome. Tell him John from Wi says hello. (toured with him
in Europe twice) Also - years ago Wild Bill came and sat in with us in
Milwaukee at at the Red Mill.(we were there 11 years) ?He was in ?his usual
crusty demeanor. After a few standard tunes he asked us for Tishomingo Blues
- so we said sure and counted it off - after 2 measures or so we knew
something was amiss key wise - we were in Ab (what did we know? Always
played it there) and Bill (who was right of course) was not real happy as he
got on the mike and exclaimed "What the hell key are you are you ass holes
playing in?!!! It's in G if you can handle it" ?or words to that effect.
Needless to say our musical stock with our customers took a short dive - but
we started over in G and got through all right and have been playing it
there ever since. While I'm on Tishomingo ?I have to say it bothers me no
end what Garrison Keillor does with it as the theme on Prairie Home
Companion. He only does the 2nd half of the tune - drives me nuts. One other
note on playing at the Red Mill - Pete Barbutti (an amazing musician and
comic and a great guy) would come in once a year for a convention and then
stop in to sit in with us. ( We were the North Water St Tavern Band back
then and now are the New South Rampart St Paraders - check us out on
Facebook - we have done the Sacramento Jubilee a few times where we really
got to know Pete) ) Anyway Pete would come in and sit with the customers
unannounced and ask if he could play our intermissions on the grand piano in
the club. And he would ?- and do great ballads and and standards and some
swing tunes until we came back on. The people had no idea who he was and he
never let us introduce him - he was just a guy playing for enjoyment - no
comedy no schtick - nothing but great music. You can still see him on
YouTube ?- one of the greatest for sure. John Knurr (I was one of the
original members of SJTS when I lived in Sacramento)

?Wondering if this rings a memory bell with someone--

Many years ago I think I read the following----

Will Bill Davison was at the same venue as was the George Lewis band.? Will
Bill was not a fan of the old style New Orleans manner of playing but
reluctantly agreed to play a tune when called upon.

When he returned to his table he was heard to say that he really enjoyed
playing with such a powerhouse rhythm section.? (I don't know the exact
quote).

Can anyone cite a reference that could confirm that this actually happened?

There are quite a few really good spots on Frenchmen Street, just outside of
the French Quarter - Spotted Cat is usually the place to start, but d.b.a.
and Apple Barrel have good stuff. Here is a full list of clubs and such for
that area and further out that way:
http://www.neworleansonline.com/tools/neighborhoods/marigny/nightlife.html
(this listing includes resturaunts that don't have live music , but you can
search by neighborhood. )

Also, if you have the time to get to the area around Oak & Carrollton there
is usually a few good acts at the Maple Leaf and other bar/clubs in that
neighborhood.

In the French Quarter, Fritzel's, Palm Court, and also check the Royal
Street area during the day for street musicians.

Check the events calendar at WWOZ (
http://www.wwoz.org/new-orleans-community/livewire-music-calendar ) for just
about everything up to date, Offbeat magazine and the oher free weekly
newspaperd the more.

While waiting for that answer, is the source for the following anecdote in
DJML?? I honestly don't remember where I heard it or read it, but it was
from a reliable source.

Once Wild Bill was sitting in with a Frisco-style trad band and upon hearing
the title "Big Bear Stomp", loudly said "What the hell's that?!"

Ringwald?? Keeler?? Was it one of you?

In 1984, I heard the Oz clarinattist jack McLaughlin in Bude, but have never
heard of him since.? Pretty good New Orleans style player, with a very woody
tone.

Hey David, you'll find a lot of trad jazz, mostly younger groups, playing in
the clubs like the Spotted Cat along Frenchmen's Street.? And usually a
couple of street bands along Royal----Doreen Ketchens is often there as is
Tuba Skinny.

The Palm Court usually has quality groups.

But there are only two Bourbon Street clubs left playing trad jazz.? One is
the Maison Bourbon and the other, which I definitely recommend, is
Fritzel's.? It's loud and you're packed in tight but some very, very good
players are in there 7 nights a week----Richard Scott, Tom Fischer, Gerald
French, Tom McDermott, Charlie Fardella, Chuck Brackman, sometimes Tim
Laughlin (or you may catch him at the Palm Court).

I'm sure list members will have other suggestions too.? Have a great trip!

I sat in with Preservation Hall Band (at their home club) back around 1985,
did a couple of tunes and I thought it went OK.

The the banjo player leaned over and said - "You West Coast guys learn all
the wrong chords!"

? All the suggestions below sound good to me. Better info that I have since
I on longer live there. To see the up-to-the-date listings, the week before
you go to N.O. ask for a copy of the very thorough listings of OFFBEAT
weekly at? janramsey at offbeat.com <mailto:janramsey at offbeat.com>

players are in there 7 nights a week----Richard Scott, Tom Fischer, Gerald

Laughlin (or you may catch him at the Palm Court).
