Lester was impressed by the sound and tonal quality of what Trumbauer played. 
I'm sure that you're not suggesting that he (Trumbauer) was in the same class as Bix or Eddie Lang. He was, throughout his career, a good technician but a minor jazz creator.
(Tram owned his own aircraft, and flying was his hobby).
