I see from the Jazz on the Tube mailings some of us receive that Chico Hamilton's career is still going on.
Reminds me of the two versions of "why am I still here?" growled by Wild Bill Davison.
The first, on film, after a slug from a bottle of whisky, was an expression of amazement that he had survived swallowing the potations concocted privately during prohibition.
The second was I think in a radio interview, referring to the very classy jamming company already at the time up where the hooch still hadn't managed to take him.
He had planned a modus vivendi, he said, in the event of lasting much much longer. He was going to learn banjolele, grow his hair long and tour as the oldest singing cowboy.
A true philosopher, Wild William!
