First Dinah, now Peggy Lee--jackpot! Two of my three favorite female jazz singers!--along with Billie Holiday. Peggy did mostly jazz--some pop material, but she often transformed it, and had a great sense of humor about a lot of the dumb stuff ("Who's A-Gonna Pay the Rent?"). Her finest album IMO is the 1952 (56?) "Black Coffee" LP--with Pete Condoli and a rhythm section that included Jimmy Rowles giving a clinic on sensitive accompaniment and Ed Shaughnessy showing perfection on drums. Forgive me, bassists--I forget who was on bass. And was Peggy drop dead beautiful?
