Since I started to understand "Free Jazz" a bit more by playing at FNM, I
now appreciate the musicians who can really make an interesting performance
using that form (more or less.) Sun Ra and Art Ensemble of Chicago are my
favorites, but there are a few others I have seen live. I think the fact
that most all of the musicians in those groups are/were skilled performers
of "Standard Jazz" before joining in to the more radical forms makes the
big difference. If they had been unexperienced musicians who were just
making hooting, banging, and scraping noises it would be unlistenable - and
I have experienced that stuff from time to time!
