[Dixielandjazz] Movie reviews, etc. on DJML

Ray Sherman told me a funny story about the filming.

But first: Nick was making so much money in the studios that he didn’t want to do the actual filming. He would have lost money sitting around the set waiting to film.

Ray of course was seen on camera.

There was a scene where Jack Webb is playing trumpet and someone gives him a dollar bill tip. Jack throws it over his shoulder and Ray is supposed to catch it in a beer glass. The first take, Ray misses it and yells cut. The whole set fell down.

On a movie set, no one, I mean no one says cut except for the director. He may see something happening and want to continue the scene. Sometimes the actors start adlibbing and you end up with a gem.

Ray said he was so embarrassed.

BTW- Ray is the only one left out of those great musicians.

Here's the main personnel in the "Pete Kelly's Blues" band with At the Jazz Band Ball. Nick Fatool Both Pollack and Fatool swung the band like crazy. To me, this was one of the most joyful Dixieland groups ever (though they did some pretty vanilla non-Dixie stuff too). [Trumpeter Dick Cathcart, trombonist Moe Schneider, clarinetist Matty Matlock, pianist Ray Sherman, bassist Walt Yoder, and Ben Pollack] Dig 'em.

Speaking as one person, I found the reviews of PK's Blues and of the Peggy Lee bios to be filled with interesting info and commentary on her and many artists in her life and in the movie. In the 50s I bought many fine records of the Ben Pollack Pick-a-Rib Boys--mostly, the same group as in the movie, but the latter had Nick Fatool on drums. Now I have a CD of the splendid combo. The tabloids cited headliners like Ella and Peggy, understandably, and stopped short of the non-celebrity sidemen. They wrote in a literate manner IMO, for interested popular audiences, not for jazz geeks (I use the term affectionately) like us. I hope we don't narrow the range of postings about jazz.
