Anton correcly identified six black bands that did record in USA up to 1917.

Your email seems to indicate that they either WERE, at least - partly -
colour blind, or much less colour conscious than their American
counterparts. Wasn't that a reason for so many American Negro performers
(I assume that musicians were not alone in that) who took residence in
Europe?
There was a case of an American Negro who served in the French ariforce
during WWII. When The US joined the war effort, he wanted to fly for his
own country, but was told that no Negroes were accepted.
