Anton correcly identified six black bands that did record in USA up to 1917.

Coincidentally a new issue from Germany shows that outside America record
companies weren't so colour blind. BLACK EUROPE consists of 2 books and 44
CDs (!!) of black artists recorded in Europe (including England) up to 1927.
It's reviewed in the latest VJM magazine which mentions a blues harmonica
recording from 1904, the first recording of stride piano in 1911 and the
first black scat vocal on record from 1915.

Obviously not all, probably only a minority, of the 1243 tracks are by blues
or
jazz inclined artists but this issue should result in a new view of early
jazz history.
This is an edtion limited to 500 copies, priced at 490 euros. No doubt most
of those will end up in
libraries and institutions If you're interested go to www.bear-family.de

A cheaper 3 CD set with booklet is available, but once again a wide field is
covered. I would have thought that a separate set of purely jazz(y) items
would be a commercial proposition.

Best wishes
Jack Mitchell
