Of course, although I' like Philip Larkin, find it  difficult to believe
that anybody can genuinely enjoy Coltrane!

That is debatable.  I don't mind if people call it all "music" (personally,
I don't), but I do not beliee ite has anything to do with jazz (hence
quotation marks in my references to "modern jazz").

It has nothing to do with loosening up.  Live and let live.  As to the
musicians in quesion, I'll paraphrase Eddie Condon - perhaps there is room
for Coltrane music (?) - preferably where I am not.  Others may enjoy the
freedom of listening to whatever they please, but, like with smoking  - out
of the range of my ears.
