[Dixielandjazz] How Long Do CDs Last? - NPR

The issue to remember about disc drives is that they are mechanical devices
which are on and operating all the time the computer is on (wear and tear)
unless one only attaches the hard drive to the computer when needed. I've
had to replace many hard drives - only a few CDs have failed. That said the
best back up is in the cloud with a reliable cloud service such as Google,
Microsoft, Apple, Dropbox, etc. These services provide backup for companies
large and small as well as you and I. They also have multiple backups of
each file stored, the best equipment and highly technical people who make
certain that our files are safe.

My earliest CDs have lasted till now as have those of others. However, I now
have them copied onto a computer drive and backed up. That means, for me,
they're at fingertip level, fully trackable and findable, at least as far as
my memory goes for a search, and they're backed up to an auxiliary drive.
I'm thankful for today's technology where I can do these things and protect
a lifetime investment. I don't know how many of you have thought of your
music as a lifetime investment, but it truly is. Many of you probably have
more music than I do and I have a ton! Capture it in today's dollars for
replacement and make a quick calculation and you'll see the true investment
it is.
