One other club worth mentioning on Bourbon is Fritzel's. They're near the Maison Bourbon, between Orleans and Ann. Going back to the time that Jack Maheu had the band there, they've had a tradition of welcoming sit-ins.
If you know what you're doing. Tim Laughlin and Tom Fischer both play there with some frequency. Usually the bands are smaller---piano, bass, drums and two lead instruments, often a trumpet and sometimes a clarinet---so they welcome the added horn. You can get a taste of the joint on Youtube or listen to the music at fritzelsjazz.net.
Otherwise most of the OKOM is either on Frenchmen's Street (at the Spotted Cat, 3 Muses and other places) or scattered around town at places like Buffa's, just outside the quarter, and at Mayfield's in the Royal Sonesta.
Preservation Hall still holds forth but you need to pick your bands carefully and be prepared to sweat if you're going down this summer.
Tell your friend to have a great trip.

Subject: [Dixielandjazz] OKOM in New Orleans
Hi,
A friend of mine, a traditional trombone player, is planning a visit to New
Orleans in October (he has not yet given me the exact dates), and would
like to hear some jazz while there. I don't think that the current
Preservation Hall can fill the bill.
He is not certain whether he should bring his trombone with him. He'll be
travelling to NYC and Las Vegas in addition to NOLA.
Any advice?
Cheers
