I thank Bill Haesler for the name of David Caceres
I am still a Chuck Hedges fan regardless of his departure, but delighted that "Chuck Hedges lives" in the annual tribute concert and the fund. Very grateful of the chance to mention same.
I mistyped his name for another, for I did note with sadness his passing -- one of the clarinetists who now alas only on record sounds like somebody.
I remember John Barnes producing a clarinet on a Glasgow gig, mostly devoted to his baritone playing, and it had been so long since I'd last heard him on clarinet I was struck by how personal the sound was.
Other clarinet discoveries -- not all still with us in body -- of recent years included
Frank Chace
Kim Cusack
Evan Christopher
and the bebopper Mort Weiss
(in case anybody liable to be interested hasn't discovered him)
and I think the name of another of the best is Dave Bennett,
corrections welcomed to publicise the player.
Oh, and there was the guy who was playing very good tenor in Edinburgh some years ago, disappointing audience members of more specialised interests because he'd not read the programme and was unaware he was billed to manifest his distillation of Noone and Dodds and
.. and I've been unable to attend gigs by at least one lady aurally matching that description
and I'm sure the names are worth mentioning regardless in the way in which each is alive.
Of course Ken Mathieson's maestros Martin Foster and Dick Lee haven't been new to me in years.
Always fresh, though! Like good eggs
