I first heard them in Boston in the late '50s. The CH Quintet: Buddy Collette (flute, clar, tenor & alto sax), Jim Hall (guitar), Fred Katz (cello), Carson Smith (bass) and of course Chico on drums. If you like this sort of thing (rather "modern" for many figgs), I suggest AMD Jazz AMSC949, a two-CD set entitled "Chico Hamilton Quintet-three classic albums." It's a re-issue of 3 LPs + a few trio tracks from 1953-56.

I remember attending a Choco Hamilton concert in Sacramento in the late 50s. What a fantastic group. I was mesmerized by their musicianship, arrangements, etc. As I remember, there was a stringed instrument like a cello, guitar, bass & of course drums. Seems as if there was another instrument like maybe a sax, but can’t remember. Very modern and very interesting.
