Mike, it was our pleasure to have you here, and thanks so much for the inspiration and vast knowledge you imparted upon the bands up here in Rocklin who were wise enough to have you!  Those kids will never forget the rare opportunity they had!  Enjoyed playing with you again after all those years.  Thank you for your great contributions to jazz in youth for so long!  Happy gigging! I had a great time in Sacramento last weekend.  The musicians I played with were wonderful and it was great to play with old friends like Bob Ringwald, Jim Maihack, Shelly
Denny, Lenny Pollachi, Vince Bartels, and Kristy Cocuzzi (Reed).  Also good to see John Cocuzzi again and have him do one of the clinics with me.  And also great to play with some new friends.  Much thanks go to Kristy for not only booking me for the Trad Jazz Society Monthly concert, but for setting up clinics for me with three different schools.  One of the greatest things about the weekend was that we actually got some of the kids from the clinics to come to the Trad Jazz Meeting for the first time ----- and some of them even played.  These kids had a great time and said that they would be back.
Hooray!!  More young people "into the fold."
Cudos should also be given to Bob Williams and the TNT youth band that played the first set.  They sounded great and I had the pleasure of playing one tune with them.
Nice turnout for the event and a very appreciative audience.
I must also give thanks to Ken McMurray and his wonderful lady Mary for their gracious hospitality and really good food!

I am sure Bill Haesler will know whether I have spelled the forename in the subject line correctly.

But surely when calling on his discographical expertise

one should doggoned consarned damned well say "please"??

I suggest a proper attention to good manners in other life

and a wariness of excessive "good manners" on stage,?

thank you,

R.

Dear Bill,

Many thanks for the Jack Wiard videos. I thoroughly enjoyed both of them.

However, I haven't seen any videos of the complete band. I'd be grateful to hear if there are any currently available on the internet.

Kind Regards

Bob Smith

Dear David,
The catalogue number of the CD would have helped, but I assume it is Columbia CK 66999.
I bought it when it was released in 1996.
Great stuff for a mouldy fig like me.
But I don't think Marek would like the minstrel/yodelling vocals.

The CD includes an excellent 20 page booklet with background notes and full details.
Here is the recording information as requested.
The tracks on the CD are in chronological order.
Cheers,
Bill.

Dear Andy,
You are right.
In my enthusiasm I missed the 8
I've had several 'complaints' about the link and when I went back could not find it.
Fortunately, I spotted your email just as I was about to attempt to sort it out.
Thank you.
What would we DJMLers do without you? You IT guru, you.
I also mispelled our bass player's name as Connelly instead of Conley.
I hope he turns up on Sunday afternoon.

Many thanks,

Hi Bill. Thanx for the info. I just wanted to make sure folks could check
out Amazon to be sure they could get it--one never knows how fast used
items we might want are sold out.

Allow me to jump in ahead of dear Bill.  Emmett Miller was a
brilliant minstrel show veteran who was rescued from obscurity when
Columbia released this CD in 1996, presenting a bunch of recordings
he made for OKeh in 1928-29, near the end of his life.  The band put
together for the recordings was called the Georgia Crackers and used
Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey, Artie Schutt, Eddie Lang, Stan King or Gene
Krupa, Manny Klein or Leo McConville, Joe Tarto and others.

What's stunning about Miller is not just the jazz quality of these
recordings.  You quickly will realize that he's the guy who taught
both Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams how to sing.  The Amazon link is

         http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000002B10/ref=dm_dp_cdp?ie=UTF8&qid=1384556102&s=music&sr=1-1

but sadly, it appears that the CD is out of print.  A few non-Amazon
vendors, and folks on eBay, are selling remaining new copies for
prices starting at $40, or you can buy the tunes as mp3s.  But you
really want the CD, as it has a great booklet telling the Emmett Miller story.

You can see a few more of the details at

         http://www.discogs.com/Emmett-Miller-The-Minstrel-Man-From-Georgia/release/1332676

But wait, there's more.  Columbia's CD presented the best surviving
recordings of Miller, and it constitutes about half of the recordings
he made.  I was so taken with him that I tracked down the rest of his
records and created an Emmett Miller Vol. 2 CD for my own
enjoyment.  I've put the files from it at

         http://dickbaker.org/EmmettMiller2/

Feel free to listen/read/download.  None of this has ever been reissued.

Emmett Miller's complete discography is available for download at
archive.org. it's a shame that the inventor of American popular music is
marginalized because he performed in blackface. There is a *fantastic* book
about him by Nick Tosches, "Where Dead Voices Gather". Check it out at your
local library if you can.
Cheers!
