I have another anecdote about sitting in that also ties with the
"drummerless" thread some weeks back.
Sac à Pulses played the Medford festival twice. Had a ball both times.
On our last set of the weekend at one of those appearances we were in a
Moose (or Elks or Veterans) Hall followed by Bert Barr and his wonderful
Uptown Lowdown JB. Our last tune was Dans Les Rues d'Antibes and I asked
Bert over the microphone if he knew it. He reminded me that he wrote it
and promptly got his horn out. We had a blast as anyone would playing
with Bert.
But, that is not what I wanted to dwell on. That was just setup for
bragging about our drummer Marc Verne. Bert has oft said he prefers no
drummer than an under par drummer or a drummer that doesn't play the
"style." My man, the late Stephen Joseph was a rare drummer/washboarded
that had open playing rights with the ULJB.
Bert had mentioned throughout the weekend that he was impressed with
Marc's playing. After our rousing finale in the Streets of Antibes, Bert
took over the mic and thanked me for inviting him up and then turned to
Marc and said pointing his finger; "You don't go anywhere." Marc looked
at me with a perplexed worried look. I assured him that he had just
received a solid compliment and he should keep his rump on the drum
stool and enjoy the ride.
Marc played the whole set with them and told me afterwards that he
didn't know any of the numbers. Bert praised him solidly afterwards and
would not accept that Marc is more into bop than into old style jazz.
What makes Marc stand out are his ears. He is one of the most listening
drummers I know. I am spoiled to play next to him regularly.
Ok, I'm done bragging about the musos I mix with.
All the best, Gary
