In the recent discussion about Barney as a section man with Ellington (also Oliver), nobody commented on his work as soloist on tenor.  In fact he was his own man on that instrument -- listen to Oliver's Someday Sweetheart and pay attention.  That short solo and a few others demonstrate my point.  Lyrical playing, unlike anyone else I can think of --    Of course his real status is as a clarinetist, and rightly so -- but still . . .  . . .
