I'm passing this along just as Pensacola Jazzfan Mike Lynch sent it-a link
for those interested.
Couple of reasons:-1.-DJML doesn't transmit pictures.
2. Wont be of interest to everyone-so,
if you're not interested, easy to move along.
Norman comments; Agree with Mike, it's more about John Hammond and his role
with Columbia Records and also his relationship to Benny Goodman, who in
time became Goodman's brother-in-law. For those not familiar with John
Hammond's position on civil rights, he was a white man ahead of his time.
Was instrumental in getting Goodman to form his small group-Teddy Williams,
Charlie Christian, Lionel Hampton. Was active early with NAACP. Also took
the side of coal miners during strikes of the 20s-'30s and might well have
been killed.
His associate's comments about how difficult Hammond could be amplifies and
confirms comments I've heard from George Avakian's talks and also my
reading.
Thanks, Mike!
