Versatile drummer Hal Smith with the Jim Cullum Band in San Antonio sends
this note about his connection with Mike Meddings. At my request, I asked
about Hal's current musical activity. For those of you who don't know Hal,
he spent some time in New Orleans and for over a decade was connected with
the America's Finest Dixieland Jazz Society in San Diego. He has written a
number of articles on jazz history for the AFDJS newsletter. He has other
historical interests as well.
So-here are Smith's comments on both. Thanks Hal.

Re Death of Mike Meddings:
Very sorry to hear it. Mike was a very nice man and he really worked hard
to preserve the music of Morton and his colleagues.
I didn't really know him except for our e-mail exchanges. I wrote a few
articles for the Jelly Roll Morton site (to accompany the musician draft
cards) and sent some notes regarding Morton's band recording of "Big Fat
Ham."
Re: Hal's current musical schedule
Nothing new to report here; still playing the regular schedule with the
Cullum Band: Mondays at Tucker's Kozy Korner; Tuesday through Thursday at
Bohanan's Prime Steaks and Seafood and Fridays at the Boardwalk Bistro.
Next out-of-town trips are in September.
Best,
Hal
