I interviewed Jess Stacy on my radio show back sometime in the 1980s. It seems that Jess was the first musician to walk out on the stage at the 1938 Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall concert. I asked him, “Were you a bit scared?”

He answered, “Damn right I was. I played my tunes and then snuck out the back door and down the street to a bar and had a few belts before coming back.”
