Dear Ken,
According to Eric Townley in his 1976 book 'Tell Your Story':
"To 'get it', in the musical sense that 'to snag it' or 'get it' a musician had to produce some first-rate improvisation in his solo. Derived from the riverboat term meaning to catch something with a boat-hook."
Mmmm.
However, Richard M Jones' 'vocal' does mention 'captain'.
It is not mentioned in Robert S Gold's 1975 book ''Jazz Talk'.
Very kind regards,
Bill.
