Saw Tbone Shorty perform with his group near Aspen, Colorado a few weeks
ago. Elevation there was well over 8,000 feet. He put on a high energy show
for about 60 minutes reminiscent of an amped up smaller version of the Dirty
Dozen BB, switching between trombone, trumpet and vocals. Strong brass chops
on each instrument. Musically wasn't overly impressive IMHO, but technical
proficiency was good. HOWEVER, the real jaw dropper was his circular
breathing on a trumpet on a certain lick for what must have been well over
three minutes straight...the athleticism of the feat was what struck me
most. In any case, hats off to someone who is making a go of a "horn-led"
ensemble in this day and age. He's a good entertainer.

I then found this on YouTube:

The melody used by Shorty at the beginning of his version is very similar,
but of course he tossed in some funkier-today rhythm that really works well
with this Gillespie/Rollins theme.

All good stuff!

Jim
