The Vagabond Reeds Invite You To Dance
At The Bunny Berigan Jazz Jubilee

The Vagabond Reeds, led by David MacGregor, invite you to dance to their music at the Bunny Berigan Jazz Jubilee on Sunday, May 20th from 1:00 to 2:45 PM.  They have become known for a style that has a very strong rhythm section plus a driving front of reeds that play in a unique way with lots of variety.  They play many favorites of Bob Wilber and Ken Davern such as “Swing That Music”, “Baby Face”, “Swanee”, “Lady Be Good”, “Apex Blues”, “A Porter’s Love Song to a Chambermaid”, “Come Love”, and many others.  The Vagabond Reeds are fun to listen to and a pleasure for dancing.  Members of this great band are:

David MacGregor  -  David is leader of the group and plays soprano sax, clarinet and bass clarinet.  He comes from Milwaukee but lives half-time in Grant County.  He also co-leads and performs with The Rhythm Aces, a new Orleans style traditional jazz group.  Both the Rhythm Aces and the Vagabond Reeds play at the Coliseum Bar on Olin Ave. in Madison, WI.

Jack Meilahn  -  Jack lives in Naperville, IL., and plays the acoustic guitar in a Marty Grosz style as well as the banjo.  Jack is a fine vocalist and performs also with the Red Rose Ragtime Band.  He can be found playing with other Chicago groups and in festivals in the US and overseas.

Dave Bock  -  Dave is a talented young player of 24 from Mukwonago.  He will be playing the string bass, one of the several instruments he has mastered in making a career in jazz.  Dave is a jazz historian and collector of 78 rpm records.  At the present time he is starting a new service, that of repairing musical instruments.

Jack Carr  -  Jack makes his home in Cedarburg and is a talented and sought after drummer.  He is also playing with the Kaye Berigan 5Tet on Saturday at the Bunny Berigan Jazz Jubilee and can be found with The Milwaukee Connection, a Benny Goodman style quintet developed by the late Chuck Hedges.

Kim Cusack  -  Kim comes from Warrenville, IL., and is one of the best jazz clarinetist/alto saxophonists in the country.  He has performed and recorded with the Salty Dogs, Bob Schulz’s Frisco Jazz Band and Red Rose Jazz Band.  Kim was selected this year to be the featured musician for a press release at the 2012 Bunny Berigan Jazz Jubilee.  He is a part of the newly formed Bunny Berigan Jubilee Band and will be playing throughout the weekend in every session.

Doc Westring  -  Formerly of the Milwaukee music scene is now part of  Door County.  He retired from his profession as an attorney in 2006 and has been playing gigs for 56 years as a piano player.  His own band was called “Dr. Jazz” and began in 1995. Doc was the featured musician for a press release at the 2007 Bunny Berigan Jazz Jubilee.  He remembers when he played with the River City 6 out of Green Bay and they played two years in a row (1978 & 1979) at the Berigan Festival.  He said “We did a four hour concert at the old Community Building and then went down to the American Legion and started out the jam session there.  Needless to say, our chops were a bit sore, but we all had a great time.”

All who come to the 2012 Bunny Berigan Jazz Jubilee will have a “great time”.  For more information on the event one can go to www.bunnyberiganjazzjubilee.com
