I have a question for all the Blues fans on the list. It's about "Matchbox Blues" by Blind Lemon
Jefferson. My question concerns the line "....will a matchbox hold my clothes". It sure sounds to me
like Jefferson sings "...will a matchbox hold my soul". So what do you think? I know that every
reference will show the word is "Clothes" and not "Soul". I have a copy of the Library of Congress
lead sheet and it says "Clothes", Carl Perkins famous record from the 1950's says "clothes", The Beatles record
says "clothes" and so does Albert King, BB King, Ma Rainey, Eric Clapton, etc. It just sounds to me
like he says "SOUL". The full line goes something like this. "I'm sittin' here wondrin' will a matchbox
hold my soul/clothes".
So, any ideas?
