So sorry to have learnt about Barnes' illness!
One of the best!
I've heard him quite a few times (clearly, as I am an Alex Welsh
admirer), both with Welsh and Humph. Although I have probably heard
more of his tenor sax than baritone, to me he will always be a
baritone player. And no too bad on clarinet, either.
I'll never forget his appearance as the featured soloist at the
Edinburgh festival. Barnes came on stage with a Hawaiian shirt, while
the accompanying Roger Nobes (I think) group was formally dressed.
Barnes "aplogized:" "I am sorry, but the band had no time to change to
uniform." At another festival (Liverpool), where he guested with a
local (and excellent) swing group, he announced: "We cannot sell you
any CDs, but we can offer home made strawbery jam." I was very happy
to be there and hear John Barnes again.
I wish him speedy and full recovery.
