Very sorry indeed to hear about John's stroke. 

There are a lot of very nice things worth saying about him, and the last thing I wanted to hear was bad news, for which I'm grateful in the way one is grateful for unwelcome tidings. 

It can't be that many weeks since I posted a note commending his practice of reviving Alan Sherman improvements of pop-songs. I imagine a lot of people would like to send their good wishes,
