I gradually broadened my interest >>

You certainly did. How lucky you are to have had the good sense to expose
yourself to music of all types. Not only that but you have also LISTENED
and made an informed choice. Most of us, and I include myself, tend to get
stuck in a rut at some point and music (and other things, books, film etc)
which do not fit are often labelled rubbish without really giving them the
attention they deserve.
This group recognised long ago that we could not even agree on what
constituted `jazz` and invented the term OKOM for Our Kind Of Music. This
enabled everyone to (usually) include, or exclude any facet of jazz which
pleased, or displeased them.
In theory that should have allowed a certain amount of harmony to exist over
a wide range of music but there are unfortunately a few individuals who
like to push the envelope. Just ignore them.
I for instance do not like Monk, Trane and don`t think much of Blakey
either. But then I think that Mrs Miniver was one of the best films I have
seen so who is going to take any notice of a unreconstructed rebel like me?
I shall not take exception to the opinions of any of the obvious nut cases
with cloth ears who like modern jazz and shall treat with disdain their
opinion of Chris Barber and Acker Bilk.

Cheers

Pat
