I just heard the sad news about the passing of Maurie Fabrikant on 16th May.
Maurie was a fantastic two-fisted jazz pianist who could also spin wonderful
yarns about the Australian jazz scene. I had the pleasure of playing with
him on several occasions at various Australian jazz festivals, together with
some of my mates in the Major Fieldgood Jazzband. There was not a better hot
piano player on the scene and woe betides any bass player who tried to
compete with that powerful left hand. His was a wonderful effort for
goodtime jazz and I just do not think he can be replaced. What a loss!
I attended the 66th Australian Jazz Convention in Bundaberg in December last
year and, although he was obviously not up to the piano playing, I did video
this wonderful piece of storytelling and singing by Maurie. I am glad I did
because it will always be a memento to me of one of the important figures in
Australian jazz:
