Well if that's what you think it is all about as a Professional Musician then perhaps you should just stay home in your garage and play what You want to play all the time. where nobody will complain or hold you accountable and you can become a legend in your own mind :))

But that ain't show business and it is also not the music business no matter what genre of music you chose to play, Today's market likes to call themselves Original Music Aritsts and they usually play to empty rooms until they break up and form five more groups to do the same stupid nonsense all over again and play to even more empty rooms. Nobody wants to pay to hear their Original usually mediocre at best diddlings of an attempt at Original songwriting.

Unfortunately in today's music world they far out number real honest and talented musicians and songwriters of any caliber worth paying to hear.

They are called Starving wannabee Artists. Who are so desperate they will PAY TO PLAY even to an empty room and buy their own drinks and food too.
Cheers,
Tom Wiggins

"Nothing but a music for dancers." And just whom do you think was paying his
bills? Playing what your customers want has ALWAYS been how musicians have
survived, if not prospered. This includes Rockers, jazzers, minstrels,
Mozart, all the Bachs, and Ugh ,the first guy to twang a bowstring while
Mrs. Ugh whacked on a hollow log with a stick. (He was a lousy shot and they
lived off the generosity of better hunters.)

You get to play what you personally want after the last set, when the
customers have gone and its just a bunch of friends and acquaintances in the
place.

Paul Whiteman band had pretty good musicians. His music was well done.
However, it remains nothing but a music for dancers.
