Elazar,

Generally if there is room in the overheads you should be able to carry your
instrument on the plane. Some of the larger airlines use commuter size
planes for some of their routes. The overheads on these planes are not large
enough for a full size banjo and the instrument has to be gate checked. You
leave the case at the gate and the crew loads the instrument. You receive
the instrument at the gate when you land but you do lose control.

If I fly American Airlines from Denver to Los Angeles they use the smaller
planes.

I would check with the airlines and see what size planes are being used. If
it is a commuter size plane then you may want to take a hard shell case
since you won't be able to keep your instrument with you.
