To the DJML and friends,

I just received a phone call from Garry Powell reporting that Ernie
Carson passed away yesterday in Portland, Oregon at age 74. At this
point I have no details as to cause of death or any plans for a
memorial. He was working on a book on his life in jazz, but sadly it
will not be published now. He was one of a kind, and certainly defined
the term "jazzman" in his era.

 From Wikipedia:
Ernie Carson (born December 4, 1937, Portland, Oregon) is an American
Dixieland jazz revival cornetist, pianist, and singer.

Carson played trumpet from elementary school, and played with the
Castle Jazz Band in the mid-1950s prior to a stint in the U.S.
Marines. Following this he worked in Los Angeles with Dave Wierbach,
Jig Adams, Ray Bauduc, Pat Yankee, and Turk Murphy, and led several of
his own groups from the 1970s, including the Capital City Jazz Band
and a new version of the Castle Jazz Band. After more than twenty
years of playing based in Atlanta, he moved back to Oregon in 1995.
