If you take the time to write a message, it should be part of the same exercise of tact, discretion and intelligent consideration to minimise the length of tail it has.  It's hardly necessary to have everything of what you've been answering present, when replying to mails from the same day -- and writing to people liable to be reading your mails pretty well on the same day  -- or a lot of these mails in a short period of time and not referring that far back.  
People presumably know what I am talking about here?
