[Dixielandjazz] jazz photojournlist Bob Byler is hospitalized

Many of you on each list know and admire Bob Byler.  He's a retired
journalism professor who has documented jazz, particularly traditional jazz,
having written and published photos  for Mississippi Rag and The American
Rag among others. Bob has had several medical problems over the past couple
of years.

His wife Ruth sent this recent message:

 

Bob had major surgery yesterday (Sunday)  He was totally infected inside.
Bladder had infectious tumors which were removed last Wed the 19th and he
was admitted. CAT scans showed massive problems in the colon and he had to
be cleaned out before the colon surgery.  a foot of colon, a foot of the
small intestines , and his appendix were removed and the

infection cleaned out.  He survived the surgery and will be in ICU for 4
days or so.  The Dr said he would be in 

the Hospital another two weeks and then probably be sent to rehab.  Biopsies
will show if the infection cause is from diverticulitis or Crohn's disease.
