Dear Jazzmates,
Those of you who subscribe to Matt Chauvin's '20s Jazz' site may have received yesterday's offering.
All four sides recorded at the Eddie's Hot Shots" session led by Eddie Condon.
(Both the Victor sides and their corresponding alternate takes made for the Bluebird label!)

Great stuff.
Which raises something I have wondered since way back in my early jazz daze.
On "That's A Serious Thing", in his introduction to take-1, Jack Teagarden plays the 'Can't on, everything I have is gone' phrase from "Stormy Weather".
Nothing unusual about that, except the "That's A Serious Thing" was recorded on 8 February 1929 and "Stormy Weather" was composed in 1933 by Harold Arlen (music) and Ted Koehler (lyrics) for Cab Calloway.
This is the story:

So, did JT's recording contribute anything?
And, if so, where did he get the blues phrase from?
Very kind regards,
Bill.
