Bob Ringwald sent this one in to djml:
>Winston Churchill was once asked, "Doesn't it thrill you to know that when
you make a speech, the hall is packed to overflowing?"
"It's quite flattering," replied Sir Winston. "But whenever I feel that
way, I always remember that if instead of making a political speech I was
being hanged, the crowd would be twice as big."
I can vouch for this... here from my memoirs, as the famous English actor Michael Cain used to say "not many people know this"

The war was over, and it was election time. July 5th 1945. At the run up to the election Winston Churchill held a rally at Walthamstow Stadium about a mile from where we lived. Dad didn’t go, he was at work, I and a few pals went along to see the war leader. The place was packed with 20,000 East Enders who booed and heckled when he tried to speak. We were right at the back of the stands and after his dramatically reduced speech we got out quickly to avoid the crowds. It was just as well, as we left all the doors to the ground were being locked, in case things got out of hand. They smuggled ‘Winnie’ out and as he passed us down the road with a police escort he was booed out of Walthamstow. In his notorious election radio address of June 4th 1945, he claimed "that a socialist government, if elected, would have to fall back on some form of Gestapo" A Labour Government, under Clement Attlee was returned with an overall 145 seat majority.
