Steve also included my mate Robert Calder's pertinent comment:
"Sure is different, his name being Mundell"
Dear Steve and All,
Including Robert, who can go to the head of the class this week.

OK then.
The film clips come from a 13-part (30-minutes each) television series called 'The Subject Is Jazz' produced for US TV Education Films and directed by Lynwood King
It was hosted by Gilbert Seldes and the Musical Director was pianist Billy Taylor.
Part 2, 'Early Jazz', was filmed on 16 April 1958 with Wilbur and Sidney DeParis, Omer Simeon, Wilber Kirk (drums/harmonica) from the regular DeParis Band at that time plus Billy Taylor (piano) Mundell Lowe (banjo) and Eddie Safranski (string bass) from the regular house band for the series: Doc Severunsen, Tony Scott, Jimmy Cleveland, Billy Taylor, Mundell Lowe, Eddie Safranski and Osie Johnson.
Although, so far, only four tunes by the DeParis group are available on YouTube (Frankie and Johnny, March Of The Charcoal Greys, Panama, Muskrat Ramble) the other items featured were "Just A Closer Walk With Thee/Didn't He Ramble/High Society".
Now. On "Frankie and Johnny" only, does anyone else hear the distinctive banjo beat of the left-handed Lee Blair?
The regular member of the DeParis group at that time.
He is not on screen on the clips we have, but must have augmented the band for this one number.
Very kind regards,
Bill.
