This week on Riverwalk Jazz, it's Jimmy McHugh's songs interpreted by
leading lights of classic and vintage jazz performance including Harry
Allen, Rebecca Kilgore, Nina Ferro, Topsy Chapman, and a peerless
performance of McHugh's "Doin' the New Low-Down" featuring tap dancer
Savion Glover.
You all know and love McHugh's bit hits: "On the Sunny Side of the
Street," "I'm in the Mood for Love," etc. but you may not have known
that a lot of the tunes were written for Cotton Club revues often
featuring Duke Ellington. For example, "Diga Diga Do."
McHugh amassed a fortune from songwriting in the 1920s but lost
everything in the '29 stock market crash. If he were alive today he
would have had his pension stolen by a greedy 1%-er.
